Three-day Workshop
Juicyness and Subtlety
a workshop in contact improvisation with Joerg Hassman (Berlin)
This will be a technical workshop which shouldn't feel too technical! We will revisit what I consider
to be essential for CI on a technical level: moving center to center through levels and space with shared
weight. To stay curious and challenged within this we will focus on two polarities: juicyness & subtlety.
Juicyness to me means getting the engine started, finding strength based on softness, getting out of the
way of the body, following and trusting the body’s knowledge without holding back, diving into the
deliciousness of two involved bodies going for the dance.
On the other hand I want to work on the many subtleties within what we think we already know.
This is the way to find the truly new - to truly develop our dance, becoming aware of habits and
re-patterning our movements towards more efficiency. It gives us the chance to find more details
in the connectedness within our body as well as to our dance partner and will give our dance more
choice and nuance.
A committed but playful mind, which enables us to fail happily will serve us the best in this work.
Joerg Hassman (Berlin, Germany) is a leading European contact improvisation
teacher and performer. This is the first opportunity to work with him in the UK.
His work is influenced by anatomy-based explorations, Alexander Technique, BMC, Capoeira,
play and the urge and joy of discovery....
I am teaching CI since 1995. From my background as a dance and theatre improviser, I entered the stage
and eventually contemporary dance techniques.
Teaching and performing is essential for my own learning process. I teach worldwide and I love the
differences of cultures. I still believe in Contact based improvisation on stage even though my main
stage work are set pieces with various companies. At the moment I am investigating CI in a set piece
with Daniel Werner and Sebastian Garcia Ferro and in an improvised frame with Mirva Mäkinen.
This summer I was involved in organizing the festival contact-meets-contemporary in Goettingen/ Germany.
In autumn I’ll start teaching the third CI training intensive programme together with Daniel Werner in
Berlin.
